G as in GOOSE (A-Z CHALLENGE)

A sure sign of spring; the Geese are back in River City.

They arrived early Thursday morning last week — honking like drivers in a traffic jam.

For all the noise, you would think there should be hundreds of them around. Nope. Just two, by the Traffic Bridge, right below our place.

Back in River City - standing on the ice.

The truth is the Geese have hundreds of places they can go. On the island in the river would be the best thought. They nest all over that island, near the art gallery. Maybe up on the river bank, close to our church. Maybe by the water intake for the power station, a couple of miles down the river, where the water is open all winter.

Last year, the Geese arrived March 11th. This year, they are three weeks later. I'll bet even they want spring to be here, soon. We're again being promised temperature close to 0°C (32F) for this week, with above freezing temperatures next week. Sadly, we've had the same forecast for three weeks in a row — "next week will be better."  Some day the "weather man" is going to get it right, though I suspect more by luck than good management.

For the sake of the Geese, I hope the forecast is right this time, and we soon get some warmer weather. Come to think of it, I think that would make the Humans happy, too.

Addendum

It snowed on Friday, and again yesterday. We've had snow on the ground since mid-October. Another week, and we will have had seven months of winter. But who's counting, eh?

G is also for gallop, grind, golf, gridlock, and grandiose.

Blessings and Bear hugs, folks!

    1. Oooooh, Glacial! Ugh! We've been trying the "Be cool but stay warm" plan; we're cool but not so warm.

Thank you for the note and the wishes, Zoe.

  2. G is for Golly-Gee-Whiz! That's way too much snow and cold.

The wind is blowing strong here. Maybe I can get it to move north and blow warmth to you!

On the other hand, maybe the geese know something you don't.

    1. Well, yes, Reffie, lots of snow and cold. Most of us can handle it for six month; beyond that, even the hardiest find the situation trying. I appreciate the though of sending warmer weather up here.

Also, I think the Geese have been surprised by the weather developments up here. But, then, um, you know Geese are kinda silly.

  3. I love to see the geese flying in formation; I love to see them all swimming in the water. I hate walking where they have been.

Many of them have begun their nesting here and soon we will see their families walking across the roads and causing traffic to stop. No one ever minds stopping for that and it can even put a smile on angry drivers' faces. That is a very good thing.

    1. I also love seeing the big Vs of Geese flying by. Beautiful. This year they decided to sneak in overnight. They didn't really know what they were landing into. Poor Geese!

My goodness — your Geese are enthusiastic! It's going to be a while before any set up housekeeping here. But just because of where the Geese normally stay, they will be blocking traffic before any babies arrive. Trust me.

  5. Hello, Bear, I love that name: Traffic Bridge, and hope it doesn't live up to it too often. I think birds know pretty much when it's safe to arrive. We have a good rain/hail storm here this morning, with high winds and snow at higher elevations. Feel bad for you with your snow lasting that long.

    1. The Traffic Bridge has been closed for three years. It is unsafe for any use. In fact, one end has been torn off already. No Traffic using that Bridge at all.

Winter gales haven't quite left your place either? Sorry to hear of it. I think of classic deserts being hot and dry. I know there are many different kids of deserts; I just have this image come to mind when I hear "desert." Here, we will survive, I believe.

  7. Rob, they are here year round where I live...I guess they just like Oregon...I hear them every morning honking as they fly over my house, headed to the Rogue River, about a block over from me.

    1. Well, there are a lot of nice people in Oregon, and the weather is not too bad. No wonder you have a lot of Geese. If I were a Goose, instead of a Bear, I might want to stay in Oregon, too.

    1. Pretty long and pretty wrong, Susan. Today I think you're right about that.

Haven't see the Geese since that first day. I hope they found a comfortable spot! Hoppe you're enjoying a good spring, too.

  10. G is also for Gusting winds. We've had beautiful temperatures today in the 60'sF but the winds have been gusting in the 50's which is rattling my windows and blowing dust into my apartment every time the door gets opened. I'm just happy the temperatures are going to be cooler for the next few days. This girl is not looking forward to summer. lol

I love Geese. My daughter loves ducks and geese so we used to take her to the park that has them when she was younger.

  11. I've heard you folks in the further northern hemisphere are having a brutal time getting winter to turn to spring this year. I'll send some warm thoughts in a northerly direction from Phoenix, AZ. From my understanding the birds just "know" though so I'd bet you'll see spring roll in any day now!

    1. Yes, getting the seasons to change is a bit tricky; after almost seven months of winter, the cold and white are getting pretty monotonous.

Thank you for the warm thoughts. I always believed the animals "knew" as well. But this Bear came out of hibernation way too soon, an the silly Geese were fooled, too

  13. I love geese! I spoke about them too, but under D, for ducks. I spoke about ducks as well as geese. I've also written two short stories about geese. It all stems from some beautiful geese at a local pond. I went crazy taking photos of them. They are awesome.

  14. Bear, I am sorry to be quite behind in commenting on your alphabet posts.

G...great, glad, good, grand, and in honor of spring...Green!

I so hope that your part of Canada will soon be getting on the warm side of the jet stream. Today was the first day in NYC that I actually thought about leaving my wood jacket at home. Yesterday, I made that decision about my down coat.

I've also seen some daffodils from inside a bus window. Hoping to have the opportunity to take a long walk in Central Park soon...taking my camera along.

    So...Grateful for your posts. xo

So glad you've dropped by the Bear's den. Please leave a note -- getting notes is such fun, and often informative. I'll get back to you, here or by e-mail, as soon as I can (or, if it's winter, after I wake up). 'Til then, please Bear with me.
