ELECTION FEVER

In Saskatchewan, we may be hit by three (count 'em, three) elections in quick succession this fall.

1. In the Saskatoon Riversdale Provincial (as in State or County) Riding, the by-election is set for mid-September.

2. In late-October, we have elections for Saskatoon City Council (like other urban and rural municipalities in the province).

3. Now, there's a chance we may have a Federal (national) election as well -- the key issue being programs of support for workers who lost their jobs in the recession (such as Employment Insurance).

I think elections are a good thing. It is actually a chance for people who want to think, to think about the issues that effect their lives -- political or more-than-political.

But three in a row in a few months? Let's get serious!

Yes, there are significant issues we have to deal with in our community, province, and nation
. But to try to tackle all the problems at, effectively, the same time, is to invite being overwhelmed -- politicians and voters alike.

  1. Why the by-election in Riversdale?
Libs, BQ and NDP going to pull the plug on Harper's minority?

  2. ® BF: Calvert has quit politics. Rev. Lorne is now Principal of our Theological College at the U of S. And the federal forces may trash Harper over aid to the unemployed during the recession, particularly Employment Insurance.

  3. Three elections is way to much. Did you see that Doer is leaving Manitoba as premier.

Anyway dear friend, the picture, copy mine. I don't even know where I got it, when I was on chemo I just downloaded lots of them but I have no idea who did it.

  4. ® Renee: Yes, I saw the Mr. Doer is going to be our next Ambassador to the US. Good way for Harper to get rid of a serious political threat, the way Trudeau did with Schreyer.

Thanks for the use of the pic. I'll put it on my "Chrome on the Range" blog.

  6. Loved this insight into election time in your back yard R-B. We had the local elections in June and are now facing into A BLOOMING SECOND REFERENDUM ON THE LISBON TREATY - are we fed up? You betcha!

  7. ® Sadly, IE, the politicians don't easily give up. They keep at it until they get what they want (which, according to them, is what YOU want, really). Argh!

  8. I agree. People wouldn't show up for that many around here.

  9. ® Diane: Thanks for visiting. Getting people to show up is a huge problem. In out last federal election, just over half the eligible voters cast ballots. Talk about loss of confidence in democracy!

  10. Bear I love how so many people are so original like your daughters friend who grew all different things in squares of earth. I never have ideas at all.

  13. Right after you wake up? A bit early for hibernation don't you think.
Yes we are getting elections overdose. Here, in Québec, come 1st November we will be having municipal elections all over the province and we could be in a federal election also. I'll have to check but I believe we will also be having elections for our schhool boards and for the boards of directors of our health and social services centers, local agencies and a few other things also.
    Welcome to voting land.

  14. Sorry to be slow in replying, folks. At this time of year, my brain goes from slow to crawl.

® Renee: Yeah, Chapin was great. I remember the day he died, I was working in the newsroom and there a big special bulleting (complete with bells and whistles) heralding the notice of his death. After work, I went out and bought two albums of his that afternoon. That was back in the days of vinyl and 33 rpm. (Am I sounding ancient?)

® Potsoc: Felicitations et bon chance. Je pense qu'il y aura très intéressant. Peut-être trop intéressant. Oui?

So glad you've dropped by the Bear's den. Please leave a note -- getting notes is such fun, and often informative. I'll get back to you, here or by e-mail, as soon as I can (or, if it's winter, after I wake up). 'Til then, please Bear with me.
