One matter overlooked yesterday: as well a Boxing Day, it is also time to recall St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr. You may be familiar with him through the well-known Christmas carol:
Good King Wenceslas looked out, on the Feast of Stephen,
When the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even.
Meanwhile, at home . . .
Today I decided to live dangerously and take my camera outside to get a winter picture of our house.
You can barely see the Christmas lights on the house. It's a grey day — of which we have had a lot throughout December — at about 5:00 p.m. You can't tell much about the snow from the picture. It's about half way to knee-deep, deeper where it is piled up.
This is the back of the house. The window on the left is where my study is located.
Other Family Members . . .
Wrapping up
All in all it's been a quiet day around the Bears' place. A good day for relaxing, reading, conversing, and generally taking life very slowly. Slow is good, particularly at this time of year.Blessings and Bear hugs!
Your home is pretty in the snow! So what is Boxing Day? And yes I knew about John and Stephen. I wish I could have met all of them. sandie
ReplyDeleteBoxing Day is traditionally the day following Christmas Day, when servants and tradesmen would receive gifts, known as a "Christmas box", from their bosses or employers." Thus Wikipedia. But there is lots more there.
DeleteGlad you like the loo of the snowy house. Good place to be on a cold night. We have the main floor temperature set at 17C (63F) but upstairs it is 22C (72F). Our bedrooms and studies are all the second floor, so we spend most of our time on the upper floor of the house.
Blessings and Bear hugs: Brown Bear hugs, Polar Bear hugs, or bi-polar Bear hugs!
I wish my 5:00 p.m. were that bright--maybe it's the snow. Probably, it is, as you're further east and further north.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to find you in what seems to be a good mood. I hope you had a good Christmas.
I am, indeed, doing much better, Snow. I consider each day a bit "iffy," but overall, things are good or better. Still, I do find the dark and the cold of winter a bit tough.
DeleteHow is that thumb of yours healing? I hope you have not experienced any more infection!
Peace and joy! Best wishes for you and Peggy in 2014!
I see you took my gentle hint and dared go outside for a snowy photo of your house. It does look very picturesque. That little dog looks adorable and like good company. I think you have the best of both worlds.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, no matter what you say, you need to add a picture. So I added a couple. Much better!
DeletePippa is good, and Bella is good. But together, they can be too much of a good thing. But a real dog would be five or six times Pippa's size. Something like a Poodle. Or the Irish Wolf Hound cross that my daughter-in-law has. I understand I may be getting a half share of that. I'm not holding my breath, but that would be interesting.
Blessings and Bear hugs!
**regarding above comment****
ReplyDeleteThat's why I only have half a poodle. ..NO silly, the good half!
OH that sounds interesting! Tell me more about your half-Poodle!
DeleteBlessings and Bear hugs!
I love to see your pretty house and your adorable furry friend. I'm always glad to see you've got a new post up, Rob-Bear, because it means you're not hibernating at the moment! :-)
ReplyDeleteGlad to know you liked the winter picture. It is different. Pippa's a fun dog, but always wants to be on your lap is you are sitting. Even when I'm up walking around, she rools over on her back to get here belly rubbed.
DeleteNot into hibernation this year. But I seem to be going to bed a bit earlier and sleeping a lot later. I think it has to do with the cold and dark.
I hope you keep having a wonderful winter!
BBh!
Ooh, very pretty, but now I want to reach for a coat! We have had some mild weather the past few days but are expecting cold again tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteWell, if you were up here, we could easily get you a parka! Can't help too much at a distance.
DeleteWhen you say cool, how cool is that? Zero F, perhaps?
BBh!
As a child I moved from mild weather to extreme- way up in Labrador. It was a huge change for me. I will always love snow, but in my old age I prefer to see it on my blogger friend's pages, and not in real life!
ReplyDeleteI love your front porch- very pretty. And did you climb that tree to get on the roof for the lights? :)
Labrador! What an interesting place! And I understand the bit about preferring to see it on friends' blogs. With the cold winter, either you move, or die, or simply become accustomed to it. I guess I'm in that last category.
DeleteI didn't put up the lights. They were part of the house when we bought it this past autumn. And we haven't had them on very much — electrical rates up here are beastly!
BBh!
Your home looks lovely with all the snow around. It appears to be a perfect place for a bear to hibernate or just hang out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind comment about our place. Excellent spot for hibernating or hanging out.
DeleteBlessing and Bear hugs!
Too cold for a fishducky, but still beautiful!!
DeleteI can understand that a fish ducky might have a bit of a problem with the temperature. But thanks.
DeleteBBh!
Joke: Elisabeth says to John, who is still a little boy, "Why can't you be more like your cousin Jesus?"
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Love it! Even on a very snowy day.
DeleteBlessings and Bear hugs!
Pippa is a little cutie. Winter is well and truly upon you. Here too. I hope you continue to enjoy the season.
ReplyDeleteIndeed she is. I think she and Benny might hit it off. I hope you haven't been without power for too long. Quite a winter mess you've had in Ontario. Hope you are enjoying the season, too.
DeleteBBh!
Congratulations John, tough luck Stephen, thank you Bear.
ReplyDeleteEt tu, J.C.
DeleteI can see that you are loving your cozy new house. A new den makes all the difference :-)
ReplyDeleteYou know I have my share of snow but not yet.
Happy new year, bear. Let's go for a good one
Love
kj
Oh, we do love this place, kj! It's not perfect, but it is wonderful.
DeleteHope you and JB have a wonderful 2014!
Seasons Greetings and big bear hugs to you, Mrs. Bear and all the cubs! Thank you for sharing the information about John and about St. Stephen. We don’t have Boxing Day here in the US but I have Canadian friends and I know about it. I think we ought to celebrate Boxing Day in the US too, I like that tradition.
ReplyDeleteYour home is beautiful! The picture from the front could be a Christmas card with all the snow. Pippa is adorable! Happy New Year to you!
Seasons greetings to you, too, JerseyLil. Thanks for your kind thoughts. And I'm glad you enjoy the look of our home. We like it too.
DeleteHappy New Years! Blessings and Bear hugs!
Love the pictures of the house and the dog is quite cute.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a tour. Glad you are relaxing.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed seeing the house. And, yes, I am trying to relax. I might just be able to do that.
DeleteBlessings and Bear hugs!
Nice place love the snow I bet it is cold out there. Cold here too:) Happy New Year Bear. B
ReplyDeleteThe snow is lovely, once it is shovelled. The temperature is -30C; -40C with the wind chill. Hope you've got light and heat!
DeleteBlessings and Bear hugs; and Happy New Year, Buttons.
You're movin' on up!!! Glad you were able to get out of your prior "file cabinet". I want the best for you. Has it affected your depression in a good way or not at all. I know the gray days would bring me down. We had three in a row and I noticed a definite downhill to my thoughts. Today I was able to put my shoes on and walk outside. I saw SUNLIGHT!!!
ReplyDeleteMust look stunning when the sun comes out. :-)
ReplyDeleteBlessings for the New Year! x
Happy New Year Bear!!
ReplyDeleteAnd Happy New Year to you, too, m'lady!
DeleteYour house is lovely and looks very cozy. I like the front door out like that – is it a double door type? I don’t know what they call them. I went to St Pierre et Miquelon (the French islands in front of Newfoundland – the only French territory in North America) and most of the houses have doors like this. I hope you do not get too cold where you live. Have a great New Year!
ReplyDeleteHello Bear and Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI see that your house is just as attractive on the outside as it is in the inside. What a good find! Continued blessings to you and your family as you enjoy it.
I'm freezing here in the midwest, but I can't imagine how cold it must be where you are.......stay warm and safe dear Bear, and blessings for a happy and healthy New Year.
