IN WHICH A POEM FAILS TO MATERIALIZE.

Well, it's like this. Some days, despite a poet's best efforts, a poem fails to materialize.

I have been working on a poem for some time, but in the end it seemed trivial, inconsequential, forced, and unnatural. And those are some of the nicer words I could use about it.

Now, am I going to unleash something that horrid on my readers?  No, I am not. Which is why "Coffee and Toffee" will continue to be the latest contribution to my poetry blog. (And that is now a couple of months old.)

I promise that I will try to do better, friends, and post pomes more frequently. Good poems, not gibberish.

In the meantime, blessings and Bear hugs.

  2. Bear, we all are our own worst critic. Maybe that is a good thing sometimes, but I have a feeling that your poem was pretty good.

  3. I come over here for blessings and bear hugs, and the poems and other stuff are just gravy after that. You know you are loved, just the way you are! :-)

    1. Aw, thanks, DJan! But I want to be more than just a loveable. But I'm not sure what. Like ,I don't want to know what I'm going to do when I grow up.

  4. I've been there—quite often, in fact. I was talking to a poet friend last night who had written a poem that evening and was already getting it ready to submit. I don't work that fast; I can't.

Ditto what Starting Over said above.

    Have a good Tuesday, friend.

    1. Sometimes poems spring from my head full-formed. But not often. Mostly, I need to sit with poems and let them talk to me. And sometime that doesn't happen.

      Blessings and hugs, my friend!

  6. Your gifts are being used elsewhere right now. The poetry gift will circle back around in time.

    1. You're right, Anita. I'm not worried about either of those bits. Whatever happens, happens. I don't need to worry about anything. i just get frustrated sometimes when I spend time on working on something, and it doesn't work in the end. Sigh.

  7. ugh. writers block. I get it and when it happens, its like the world shut down and all i can do is point and say "ug" .

I found that writing about the fire really unleashed a torrent of pent up "ugs" ...have any strong emotions on something that might trigger the floodgates for you? Otherwise, pull up a chair, and enjoy that life around you...it is summer after all and you deserve a mind rest once in awhile! :)

  8. Bear, I don't see any where it is written that we have to write poems. That would leave me out.

    1. Only those called to be poets are required to write poetry. The rest of us enjoy being rank amateurs — lovers of poetry.

Blessings and Bear hugs, and don't worry about not writing poems!

  9. When that happens to me .. and it does, I chuck the whole thing, take a little break and wait for inspiration to strike ~~ once again.

    1. And I'd hate to embarrass myself by submitting junk poetry to real poets. I may be a Bear, but I'm not that stupid! So please keep writing; you inspire me.

  10. Bear, poems have their own gestation period.

In the meantime, enjoy fresh air, company of friends, fresh-picked berries and let the good times roll with or without poetry. Think of all those songs musicians write and produce, and how few of those songs actually get heard, appreciated. Nothing the writer/musician did or didn't do.

    1. Sage words, rosaria, as always. I'm having too much fun to worry about poems that don't work out. I just hate wasting the time on the failed enterprise. Where is St. Jude when you need him?

      Blessings and Bear hugs.

  11. I can't sit down and write a poem because I want to do so. It has to come from God. So if I don't receive a poem for a few months, I don't worry about it. God gives me poems when He's ready for me to have them.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Like your approach. Only God can make a tree, and the Holy One is involved in a lot of poetry, too.

  12. I just wrote a poem about not being able to write poems...I don't think I will post it....why? Because I feel your pain! =)

    1. And I feel your pain, too. Why don't you let Skip write the poems? On second thought, maybe not. He's apt to give you doggerel. So to speak.

Blessings and Bear hugs, to you and Le Caniche!

  14. Funny how we all have our own styles . I write poems quickly and some I share quickly. Others I chisel away at, often looking for a better verb or metaphor, just as often trying to cut away adjectives and adverbs.

Sometimes I write a poem and am shocked it's come from my hand.

I know you are hard on yourself, mr bear. Try not to be. The birds don't question when it rains :-)

    1. Poetry, like all writing, has its own way about it. Thanks for the support!

I hope you are feeling better, and that you and your new friend are starting to get along a bit better. Imagine a piece of a space shuttle in you!

So glad you've dropped by the Bear's den. Please leave a note -- getting notes is such fun, and often informative. I'll get back to you, here or by e-mail, as soon as I can (or, if it's winter, after I wake up). 'Til then, please Bear with me.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS AN AWARD-FREE AND MEME-FREE SITE. While I'm honoured to receive awards, I find they take way too much energy in completing. Thanks, but no, thanks.
