IN WHICH BEAR INTRODUCES ANOTHER FAMILY MEMBER.

Hi, friends! This is Wally.

He's a darned cute Dog, isn't he? Perky, friendly, attractive. Gets along really well with people and other dogs. Cats, not so much. (In fact, not at all — he thinks of them as prey to be chased down.) I didn't measure him, but his back comes up to about my hip bone. So no, he is not small.

I'm told he is part Greyhound, so he's fast. (But I don't think he has ever been to a race track.) From the amount and pattern of grey on his back, I think he is part Irish Wolf Hound. His coat is really coarse. He loves going for walks — though I suspect not at -40 degrees (which is what we've had here lately). Aside from that, he's a big couch potato at home, and chooses to spend a lot of his time sleeping in his crate. Ideal Dog companion for a hibernating Bear.

Wally used to be on staff at our University, but when the decision was made to close the Animal Resource Centre (where he lived), poor Wally was rendered homeless.

Which led to Wally becoming our daughter-in-law's Dog.

A and our grandkids have been away, visiting her parents in Ontario. (Our son T stayed home and dealt with the workmen repairing their house.) This was my chance to get to know
Wally better by taking him for walks. Which is what we did. I'm sure he is strong enough to take me for a walk, but he is really mild-mannered, so we had no trouble.

So, if I mention Wally again, you'll know who I'm talking about.

Blessings, sloppy Dog kisses, and warm Bear hugs, everyone!

    1. Wally is a sweetheart. I'm sure he and Layla would make good friends. They could run circles around each other.

Wally stories. Hmmmm. I'm pretty careful about what I say on my blog about family. I'll have to check with Wally about that.

Blessings and Bear hugs, to you and Layla. And the rest of the family.

    1. I don't think keeping him is in the cards. He lives with son, dil and kids. I just take him for walks. If that changes, I'll let you know.

    1. I think Wally would love you, too, especially if you took him for walks — but not quite as long as your Trailblazers' hikes.

      Glad you like the pictures.

  9. Wally is quite handsome, Bear, and you also look quite handsome in these dual portraits.

Just yesterday I saw a dog in my own NYC neighborhood who resembled Wally. The NYC pup also seemed to have a charming, easy going personality.

Hoping your neighborhood will warm up a bit soon. That's what's happened over here...of course, that also means rain for tomorrow.

    1. Yes, Wally is quite the dog.

Warming neighbourhood? That's good. Ours is warming, too. Still not up to 0C (32F), but getting better. However, we can surely do without the rain, which means ice storms up here. Ice storms = dangerous roads, and downed power lines, and lots of unhappiness.

      Blessings and Bear hugs!

  10. He's a handsome fella....and so is Wally! :)
Yes. I can see the Irish Wolfhound in him. He is a lovely dog, and I'm sure that he is getting as much love as he is giving.
And....since it is below zero, might I ask you to put something around your face and on your hands!! You are gonna freeze!! Just because you are a bear, doesn't mean that you don't have to bundle up in those kinds of temperatures. Stay warm my friend.
    Hugs,
    Jackie

Actually, I do dress well. Just having a more casual moment with Wally at our house, before I walked him home to our dil's place. When it gets up to -5C (23F), the weather doesn't seem cold at all. Not like a couple of days ago, when it was around -40 (C and F).

What is it that you want? (Just kidding!)

This is about a normal amount of snow. And, yes, it will likely be gone sometime between mid-March and April. These things happen with some regularity up here.

    1. A beautiful friendship, indeed. And thanks.

I think Wally might even be able to make friends with your cats, if they were introduced to each other in the house, and the cats stayed calm. After a few dozen such encounters, things might work well.

      Blessings and Bear hugs!

-40° is incredibly cold! It was +16°C here in the Loire yesterday. Winter doesn't seem to have properly arrived here yet. But we are back home in the UK tomorrow where it is always that bit worse, although so far we have thankfully had no snow yet.
Happy New Year to you and yours!

    1. And Happy New Year to you too, Jean. Greetings from Wally to Lulu!

Yes, -40 is a bit cool, but we get that sort of thing in our winters, so most people shrug, keep calm, and carry on. Nice fresh weather in the Loire. Weather in the UK is a it much — we've seen pictures of the flooding on our tv over here. Trust you are high and dry.

      Blessings and Bear hugs!

  18. I think Wally is just perfect for a grumpy Bear!

He looks like a fine dog and yes I heard grey hounds are very good house dogs and sleep a lot and they do like a good chase.
I love Irish Wolf hounds too They are such majestic dogs

  19. How wonderful to have such a companion for walks, for talks, for general company. Thanks for introducing him to us.

  20. As soon as I saw him at your side, I suspected he was part Irish Wolfhound. Greyhounds are notorious couch potatoes. Wally is adorable.

  22. Thank you for your kindness to me and Wally. He is, indeed, sweet and easygoing. Nice to have a chance to walk him once in a while.

Now that we've moved to a house with a high-fenced yard, I've been thinking about getting another dog. But any dog would take money and energy on my part, and could outlive me. Strange, that. Very strange. Still, one needs to encounter one's own mortality at some point, and be fair with others in the process. Including a dog.

    Blessings and Bear hugs, kl!

Wally is indeed an adorable looking dog. No doubt, another wonderful example of the unconditional, non-judgemental love that we animals share.

    1. He is a fine fellow indeed, Amanda. I wondered about him being part Borzoi, but shape and colour configurations don't entirely match, though that may have to do with th Greyhound in him. But whatever he is, he's lovely.

  32. What a lovely dog, I'm so glad your daughter-in-law was able to adopt him. You two look like a great pair together. That's some cold weather you have. No snow here, temps in the 20sF at night and in the 60sF during the day. Sort of fall. Yes I know about llamas, met them when I worked at the rescue where they used one to protect the goats, as do many of our neighbors around here. I witnessed a llama incident there that I post about today. Thanks for stopping by so much lately. And please send some cold weather down here, OK.

  34. Great photos! I think that's only the second time you've posted a photo of yourself - the first time was with your nephew? I like your cap! What a gorgeous dog, beautiful face, lovely mix. If he's greyhound does he run and run if you let him off the leash? My friend had greyhounds and she could only run them in a paddock (field) as they would just have kept running forever. Lovely that he gets on with dogs too, message for us all in that.

  35. Dogs are all heart, and I thought "Russian Wolfhound" when I saw him. Maybe your daughter will forget to pick him up. Since I have to sleep in the recliner sofa, Joe started sleeping on the other side, so we'd still be together. Now Beau sleeps between us, with his hind legs shoved into Joe and his nose shoved into my hip. Now THAT is a pack according to the animal kingdom, and they know best.

    1. Wally never got as far as staying with us. I went over to his place every day and took him for a walk. Not quite sure if I'm ready to have another dog in our house. But having a "half share" of Wally is a good start.

Yup; Beau knows how to be a "pack" animal; he fits right in. Wish Humans knew more about that.

So glad you've dropped by the Bear's den. Please leave a note -- getting notes is such fun, and often informative. I'll get back to you, here or by e-mail, as soon as I can (or, if it's winter, after I wake up). 'Til then, please Bear with me.
